Chipotle sodium content: the complete chart and how to order less

Chipotle's sodium content is the menu's biggest hidden number. In our analysis of every possible standard bowl combination (34,560 builds), the average bowl carries about 1,750mg of sodium — 76% of the 2,300mg daily value — and 70.6% of all builds blow past the American Heart Association's 1,500mg ideal limit. Below: every ingredient's exact milligrams, ranked, plus the orders that fix it.

The short answer

Sodium is where Chipotle's clean-eating image gets complicated. Almost every ingredient arrives pre-salted, so a normal-looking chicken bowl lands around 1,640mg — and roughly one bowl in nine tops the full 2,300mg daily value on its own. The fix isn't skipping Chipotle; it's knowing which scoops carry the salt. Swap white rice for brown, pick tomatillo-green salsa over fresh tomato, keep the protein single, and you can pull a bowl under 1,000mg without it tasting like punishment.

Chipotle sodium chart: every ingredient ranked

Here is the full Chipotle sodium chart, built from our calculator's per-ingredient data and sorted from saltiest to lightest. Two things jump out. First, the saltiest item on the line isn't a meat topping or the queso — it's sofritas, the plant-based option, at 560mg per serving. Second, fresh tomato salsa (pico) carries 550mg, which means a single scoop of "just vegetables" adds more sodium than the chicken. The percentages below are share of the 2,300mg daily value.

Sodium per standard serving, highest to lowest
Sofritas (plant-based) 560 mg · 24% DV
Fresh tomato salsa (pico) 550 mg · 24% DV
Chicken al pastor 540 mg · 23% DV
Barbacoa 530 mg · 23% DV
Tomatillo-red chili salsa 500 mg · 22% DV
Carnitas 450 mg · 20% DV
White rice 350 mg · 15% DV
Steak 330 mg · 14% DV
Roasted chili-corn salsa 330 mg · 14% DV
Chicken 310 mg · 13% DV
Queso blanco 270 mg · 12% DV
Tomatillo-green chili salsa 260 mg · 11% DV
Black beans 210 mg · 9% DV
Pinto beans 210 mg · 9% DV

How much sodium is in a Chipotle bowl?

Let's walk through the order most people actually make: a chicken bowl with white rice, black beans, fresh tomato salsa, cheese and sour cream. No queso, no guac, no double meat — the sensible-sounding default. Watch how fast the milligrams stack.

The typical chicken bowl, sodium line by line
White rice 350 mg
Black beans 210 mg
Chicken (4 oz) 310 mg
Fresh tomato salsa 550 mg
Shredded cheese 190 mg
Sour cream 30 mg
Bowl total 1,640 mg · 71% of the daily value

Notice where the salt actually came from. The chicken — the thing that reads as the "salty" part — contributed 310mg, less than a fifth of the total. The rice and salsa together added 900mg. That's the pattern behind the bigger numbers too: in our analysis of every possible standard bowl combination (34,560 builds), the mean is 1,750mg and the median 1,745mg, 70.6% of builds exceed the AHA's 1,500mg ideal limit, and 10.9% clear the entire 2,300mg daily value in one sitting. The full methodology and every record-setting build live in our full bowl study.

What 2,300mg of sodium actually means

Two numbers frame everything on this page. The FDA sets the daily value for sodium at 2,300mg — about one teaspoon of table salt — and it's the ceiling federal dietary guidelines recommend for healthy adults. The American Heart Association goes further, calling 1,500mg a day the ideal limit for most adults, especially anyone managing blood pressure. Excess sodium pulls water into your bloodstream, nudging blood pressure up over time, which is why the guidance exists at all.

Now put Chipotle's numbers against those lines. An average bowl at 1,750mg uses 76% of the FDA ceiling and beats the AHA's entire daily ideal — before breakfast, snacks or dinner say a word. That doesn't make Chipotle uniquely bad; restaurant food in general runs salty, and a bowl still beats most drive-thru options on protein and fiber, as we covered in our honest look at whether Chipotle is healthy. It just means sodium is the one macro-adjacent number where the default order genuinely needs editing.

The lowest-sodium Chipotle order that still hits 40g of protein

Cutting sodium at Chipotle usually means cutting protein too — unless you build it deliberately. We searched all 34,560 standard builds for the lowest-sodium bowl that still delivers 40g of protein, and the winner is almost comically simple: chicken and black beans, nothing else.

The record holder: lowest sodium at 40g protein
Chicken (4 oz) 310 mg · 32g protein
Black beans 210 mg · 8g protein
Bowl total 520 mg · 310 cal · 40g protein · 7g fiber

That's 520mg — less than a third of the average bowl — with the protein of two chicken breasts and only 310 calories. Too spartan? Add romaine lettuce (5mg) and fajita veggies (150mg) and you're at 675mg with real volume, still under half the AHA ideal. Squeeze the lime wedges at the drink station for acidity; they're free sodium-wise. Skip the fresh tomato salsa here — one scoop would more than double the bowl's sodium.

The highest-sodium traps on the menu

The traps are the builds that feel indulgent on calories but are catastrophic on sodium. Double meat is the main culprit: doubling barbacoa alone adds 1,060mg before anything else touches the bowl. Here are three real builds from our data and what they cost you.

Sodium traps, from our 34,560-build analysis
Double barbacoa, white rice, pinto beans, tomato salsa, queso 2,440 mg · 106% DV
Double carnitas "everything bowl" (all six toppings) 2,635 mg · 115% DV
Double sofritas with white rice, beans, pico and every topping 3,075 mg · 134% DV

Yes, you read the last row right: the saltiest standard build our engine can produce is vegan. Double sofritas (1,120mg) plus white rice, beans, pico and the full topping rail crosses 3,000mg — a day and a third of sodium in one bowl. And these are bowls; wrap any of them in a flour tortilla and the number climbs further still. If a trap build is your cheat meal, make it the day's only salty thing.

5 rules for a low sodium Chipotle order

1. Go brown rice, or half rice. Brown rice saves 160mg over white (190mg vs 350mg) at identical calories. Ask for half white rice and you save about 175mg the same way.

2. Pick chicken or steak, and keep it single. Chicken (310mg) and steak (330mg) are the lean picks; al pastor (540mg), barbacoa (530mg), carnitas (450mg) and sofritas (560mg) all run 45–80% saltier. Doubling any 500mg-class protein is the single biggest sodium mistake on the menu.

3. Fix the salsa. Tomatillo-green (260mg) over fresh tomato (550mg) saves 290mg in one decision — the cheapest sodium cut on the line. Tomatillo-red (500mg) is nearly as salty as pico; treat both as occasional.

4. Get creaminess from sour cream or guac, not queso. Sour cream is a rounding error at 30mg and guacamole is a reasonable 200mg, while queso adds 270mg on top of its 120 calories. Cheese (190mg) sits in between.

5. Add it up before you order. Sodium hides in the stacking, not in any one scoop — so track sodium in the calculator while you build. It totals the milligrams live for every combination, and getting under 1,000mg usually takes one or two swaps, not a sad bowl of lettuce.

FAQ

How much sodium in a Chipotle chicken bowl?

A typical chicken bowl — white rice, black beans, chicken, fresh tomato salsa, cheese and sour cream — carries about 1,640mg of sodium, or 71% of the 2,300mg daily value. The chicken itself is only 310mg; the white rice (350mg) and fresh tomato salsa (550mg) together add more sodium than the meat does.

What is the lowest sodium meal at Chipotle?

The lowest-sodium standard order that still delivers 40g of protein is a bowl with chicken, black beans, no rice, no salsa and no toppings: 310 calories, 40g protein and 520mg of sodium. Add romaine lettuce (5mg) and fajita veggies (150mg) for volume and it still comes in at 675mg — well under the AHA's 1,500mg daily ideal.

Why is Chipotle so high in sodium?

Because nearly every ingredient is seasoned with salt before it reaches the line. The white rice carries 350mg, the beans 210mg, marinated proteins run 310–560mg, and salsas run 260–550mg per scoop. Stack five or six pre-salted ingredients and the average bowl lands around 1,750mg — the sodium comes from everywhere at once, not from one salty item.

Is brown rice lower in sodium than white rice at Chipotle?

Yes. Brown rice has 190mg of sodium per serving versus 350mg for white rice — a 160mg saving for the same 210 calories. It is one of the easiest low-sodium swaps on the menu.

Which Chipotle salsa has the least sodium?

Tomatillo-green chili salsa, at 260mg per serving. Fresh tomato salsa is the saltiest at 550mg — more sodium than a serving of chicken — while tomatillo-red is 500mg and roasted chili-corn is 330mg.

Where the guideline numbers come from

Two authorities anchor the limits used on this page. The FDA's sodium guidance sets the daily value at 2,300mg and notes Americans average roughly 3,400mg a day — so a single 1,750mg bowl is heavy but hardly unusual eating. The American Heart Association's recommendation is stricter: an ideal limit of 1,500mg for most adults, particularly for blood pressure management. Against that stricter bar, 70.6% of all standard Chipotle bowls come in over the line.

How we source this

Per-ingredient sodium figures come from our calculator's per-ingredient data, compiled from Chipotle's published nutrition information and cross-checked against the USDA FoodData Central database for standard serving sizes. The bowl-level statistics come from our analysis of every possible standard bowl combination (34,560 builds), generated July 2026. Sodium is rounded to the nearest 5mg and daily-value percentages to the nearest whole percent. Because portions are hand-scooped and recipes change, treat these as close estimates — not lab measurements. We re-review the figures each quarter and update the date above whenever they change.
